Beyond just the MSF course, I'd also recommend driver's ed if it wasn't required in your state. A defensive driving course might not be a bad thing to look into. They can aid greatly in your road knowledge at that age. I know driver's ed did for mine back in high school (it was required in Washington if you were under 18). I also was fortunate to have a mother who took defensive driving when she worked for the forest service in her 20s, and passed a lot of that knowledge on to me.
Though, the simplest defensive driving mantra, that gets passed around here, is "drive like everyone's out to hit you". Be aware of not only your blind spots, but coming into other driver's blind spots. Guard your brake lever at intersections and be ready to roll off the throttle. Study the cars ahead and behind, you can often predict drivers' actions if you're observant.
