I think the biggest mistake was to engage her in direct conversation. Some people have a true skill for diffusing a situation like that... others can trigger an explosion of rage. I've been in similar situations like that (thankfully not with that ending) where a simple calm gesture to the manager to try and diffuse while notifying the authorities. Or there is always the tazer aspect for when the women reaches in. hehe
