Not so FZ6R, but general mechanical help

Have you guys ever heard of your actual speedometer whining? Or has it always been the cable that whines? On my fiance's bike(83 Suzuki GS1100gl), he says the whining sounds like it's coming from his Speedometer cluster and he's TOTALLY convinced that it is the cluster that is whining. He's found a cluster on ebay for $299, but that's a lot of money for a shot in the dark. I've convinced him of going the cheaper route before we throw the money at this guy for this cluster and I'm going to get him a new speedo-cable. I was just wondering if anybody has heard of the Speedo actually whining.

Yup, just from a quick google it's definitely possible although like you said it seems to be the cable and not the speedo.

I have to go through that once in a while. Pull the cable out, clean it and grease it up. Probably bone dry! I had to put the cluster apart once on a car to clean up and relube.
