Always wear your gear. I was literally riding across the street from my work to have lunch so I didn't gear up. On the way back in front of my shop I had a guy in front of me who kept coming to complete stops and looking back. My first thought was maybe he was impaired(drunk/high, etc) or screwing with me. So after he came to his 4th complete stop in the middle of the road I took the street he had already driven past (to be able to make a safe turn) and without a signal as I was making my turn he quickly turned his wheels and turned into the oncoming lane of the street I turned onto and swiped across into me. basically used my hand and arm to take out the side of his car and passenger side mirror. Medics had me go to the E.R. for xrays and stitches. To make a long story short I didn't lay the bike down and thankfully the bike took less damage than me. Doesn't matter if it takes you 5+ minutes to put on your gear, how hot it is, or if the ride is shorter than the time it took to put the gear on... in most cases it saves you from stuff like this....
-UPDATE- I got a call from the other insurance company today. The car that hit me was insured; however, the kid that drove the car that hit me wasn't on the policy. They told me there may or may not be coverage. Also...my insurance adjuster came out and did a quote on my bike...instead of just replacing the parts OEM that come prepainted with the stickers, he decided to quote it on sending it to an autobody shop and having the panel patched and repainted and having new decals ordered....... o_o and he cut me a check for a grand total of $39.94 since the deductible on my moto insurance is $750.00. We will see what the other insurance company does... I may just ride with the damages except for the clutch lever (needs to be replaced to the bending against the handle.)
-UPDATE 2012-09-18- Got a call from the insurance company, the police report faulted the kid who hit me with "improper turning" The insurance company then told me that they do not base their decision on the police report.... which blew my mind, but whatever... Both insurance companies got my side of the story and we will see how it plays out.
Thanks everyone for the comments and wishes.
