Damn Eric, you're killing me. Now I've been back to the Yamaha site 300 times and thinking about that FZ1. I'm checking out mileage and insurance rates and damn, damn, damn. I was so content just 48 hours ago. If I walk into the dealership I'm done for...must resist...

You better hurry! Some of these others might beat you there and get the LAST ONE! :D I'm not one to pressure but you won't miss the FZ6 at all. She won't be mad... she'll have another owner before long...

Oh, did we mention smooth? Powerful? Beastly? Sure-footed? Planted? Beeeeeyoouuuteeeeeefuuulllll?

Besides, Dennis needs more FZ1-Forum members too! ;) I'll even go to the dealer with you, help you along. I'll bring the Salesman-Killer wife to negotiate an unbeatable deal! (Hell, if we go to Concord and see the same guy, he'll likely fall on the floor and cry then give you what ever you want! :D )

I wanna go! i love going to that dealership!

I was thinking the same thing Eric. If I go, I'm asking your wife to come with me. I guess I'll stop at the dealer tomorrow, see if they got one and have him throw a # at me just for fun. I knew that bike was great but after reading all your posts and now hearing all the stuff you're saying about the FZ1 I not only believe you, I know I'd love it too. I've got 9500 miles on Mr. Fizz in 10 months and I was just thinking I'd go another 10K before trading...:spank:

 That's how we started... "Let's throw some numbers around, just for fun." Next thing I know, she's backing the guy into a corner and landing us both a new bike! How I love this woman!

I've been checking the dealer's site and used inventory. I've yet to see mine or my wife's bikes up for sale. But, her Cortech backpack, my stock windscreen and my stock fender with the bag of screws still zip-tied to it are on their ebay store! :D

Well, Rob bought my Racetech Springs so we're going to install those with some slightly heavier fork oil all while stuffing our faces. We also plan on taking the steering head apart to either inspect and repack the head bearings, or, replace them with a set of All Balls is Rob buys them. So, his bike will be at my place, the food will be flowing and the wrenches turning. If any others would like to hang out, watch, or participate... maybe even do a mod on their own bike, please feel free to reply here and we can make it a mod meet!

Keira will be there, I believe, with Cadence so we can meet the newest member!

We hope to wrap up and do some riding local to test and shake down Rob's bike and make adjustments as needed.

Let me know if you plan on coming so I can adjust the grocery list.

:D
I plan on attending the mod meet!! Maybe an airbox mod is in order?:sinister:
just shoot me a PM with your address and a start time, and I'll GPS my way down:thumbup: What would you have me bring to assist? Thanks, Eric

we will most certainly be attending (rob and i will be doing front spring stuff with my bike soon, so it might be nice to know what's going on). i may be a little delayed though, weather depending....the school i where i did my internship has graduation on the 20th, and some of my students would like it if i were there, so i will head there first if the weather is good. i will have a better idea that day :)

After reading this thread a few times I've decided that I need to buy a piece of property with a large climate controlled barn. Within that barn I will buy and keep all of the different motorcycle that I like. :D One of which will be the FZ1!

It's really fun to read about the excitement people have for Papa Fizz. When I was shopping for my FZ6 my salesman showed me his FZ1. Because I was getting back into riding at the time I didn't consider it, now...hummm...maybe I should have bought it??? Oh well...

See if I get my large barn it won't be an issue.

First, ths FZ1 is a BEAST! She is got a growl about her that makes my head spin. Of course, I have to break her in proper so I won't know the full potential until we get some miles on her. Tonight though? What an incredible difference in handling with the inverted forks and the "right" to adjust them! The FZ1, while wider and heavier, is just as nimble and flickable through the corners as the FZ6.

Time to do mod hunting!!!

Great bike! I have ridden several different versions and agree the torque is impressive. I beg to differ though, on really twisty portions of roads, the FZ6 does feel more "flickable" but that I guess is in the eye of the beholder.

I think the adjustable front shocks probably add to the improved pliancy of the shocks. I think a FZ6 with custom shocks and adjustable spring is pretty darn nimble, but on the straight road portions, the FZ1 probably stomps. I have heard this comparison about other bikes between their 650 little brother and the 1000 liter version as well i.e.....CBR, GSX etc. Although lap time difference on the super-sport 600 versus 1000 racing class in the hands of pro's is not very dramatic.

Careful about speeding tickets and enjoy all the new mods that await you.

Fred

^^^ Other than handling, etc the main difference is in the way FZ1 does everything much much more smoothly.

Pete/Fred, what I think is absolutely amazing is the amount of HP gains you can make with this bike for short money. Most bikes don't even have half the potential at twice the cost.

The suspension on this bike along with the 190 rear tire makes me a LOT more confident in the corners. I know what you're saying Fred and thanks, I really appreciate the concern. I do want you to know that I am a Pace rider. I generally behave and only have fun when the twisties come and then, back on Pace when they end. My hooligan days are long since over but I do love just how fast this bike will go from zero to speed limit... and how fast I can escape troublesome cages. Let's just suffice to say that I am not the fastest on the road, but I'm also not the slowest. ;)

I really like the way you folks cautiously lecture and I mean that in every possbile GOOD way you can think of. It really shows that you care, we all care, about each other like a "family" should. Thank you from the core.

I promise I'll behave. :innocent:

I can't wait for all of you to come over. Michele and Briana are dying to oogle Cadence! I'll have to hold her before I get greased up. :D

Rob, have you bought fork oil yet? I forgot I bought some with the springs so I have 3 pints of new Repsol 15w if you want to buy those at a discount. Let me know and if you have, I will likely use them later regardless.

Eric - what are the typical motor mods for the FZ1? I assume the usual suspects; exhaust, Power Commander, dyno tune. But at there other common tweaks?

Well, let me chip in. I almost have spent the last month reading the entire FZ1OA board. There are the mods in order of performance gains:

  1. FCE
  2. Slip-On
  3. Lars Airbox mod and cable reroute (thinking this could work for FZ6 too))
  4. CAT gut
  5. PCIII
  6. Full exhaust system
  7. Remove secondary flies/subthrottle plates
  8. Ignition module or PC5 with autotune

What ^^^ said! :D

I'm still unsure about the FCE though. Pople have stated that there wasn't a lot of difference on the '08 and '09 models, certainly not $200 worth of difference. This is the Fuel Cutoff Eliminator which is an electronic bypass developed by a super tuner named Ivan. It is to eliminate the cutoff to the FI when you let off the throttle going into a corner which would create a delay in throttle response when you crack it back open at the apex. What I am reading is about 50/50 on these two later years. Maybe I will try it if the price drops on Ivan's kit or he gets some competition and drives the price down.

The airbox mod and cable reroute relocates the cables to allow free air flow into the new and larger opening for the airbox.

Gutting the cat may not be an option if NH does what they want for next year's inspections... they want to mic the bike for a dB check as well as sniff test. If I gut the cat, I fail no matter which can is installed.

PC III or V is still a viable option so long as I take it to a good tuner. :D I can download maps but No one will likely have one got what I have AND have not done.

Secondary flies - still reading all about those and weighing the pros and cons. ;)

I may have to pack up and move to TN or another state that has no inspections. :D

Thanks CrazyBiker!!

Include the 07 for the FCE too where the issue was fixed by slowly opening the flies to prevent that abrupt surge in acceleration.

Sounds like the secondary's are for controlling noise emissions too. EPS has really cracked down on intake noise.

I started by removing the rear fender then separating the plastic from the metal bracket. I mounted just the metal back on the bike and eyed where I wanted to cut. Since I do not have a welder, I knew I had to cut and overlap the metal so I could drill and bolt it. I chose my spot and marked it, removed the bracket then cut it into the three pieces. Drilled two holes per side and bolted them overlapped. This knocked almost 4" off the length. After I bolted it. I put the metal and plastic back together as best I could and marked the new "TOP" for the plastic. I took the hacksaw to it and cut on the line. I had to get creative and cut in and around the top to fit the bracket with the welded on cap nuts. Here are shots of the underside so you can see the overlap and bolts. This was before I cut off what was on the next two shots.
