Took everyone's advice and cancelled my pickup yesterday, and scheduled a delivery for early next week. Only issue is it's supposed to rain all next week.... figures. Oh well I'll get it soon enough, just sucks watching my gear gather dust.
The rainy days could be put to good use familiarizing yourself with the controls as well as removing fairings and locating key areas that will need to be maintained.
Sorry to hear about the delay, but I agree, think it was a good choice.
Use the time when it arrives to get used to the controls so that you can operate them without having to look down and try to find them, that is very dangerous.
Maybe sit in your driveway or garage (door open of course ) and repeat what they have you do in MSF, atleast in mine they did. Start the bike, get into first, and keep slowly releasing the clutch to get used to the friction zone. Maybe let it stall a few times so you know how your hand feels when you are getting close to the stall point. But practice lessening grip on the clutch to begin the forward momentum and then pull it back in and use your front brake. (kind of rocking on your feet so you can just keep forward/backup etc). That should help reduce your odds of stalling out on a get go from a stop light or sign, especially when turning right for example. Not good to stall when got an anxious cager behind you.
I had called ahead before I bought my bike and brought it home same day. First time riding it (and first ride after the MSF course). Took a few minutes to get used to, but riding it around Memphis before I drove it back home on the highway (1.5-2hr ride) made me more comfortable.
You definitely made the better decision in not picking it up, but it probably would've been ok. It was around 3-4months before I bought my bike after taking the MSF course (and never really being exposed to motorcycles prior) and I did just fine.
Now's the fun part though: PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE (after that damn rain goes away)!
