Is that a normal temperature or should I start worrying?
This is happening because you're driving it like you stole it on every road you go on. You're dropping down to 3rd gear everytime you go around a curve, then you gun it when you come out. You over break, then over speed because it's fun.Is that a normal temperature or should I start worrying?
City commutes, idling at lights etc also do this...This is happening because you're driving it like you stole it on every road you go on. You're dropping down to 3rd gear everytime you go around a curve, then you gun it when you come out. You over break, then over speed because it's fun.
hit longer straights, and watch the temp come down
:wav:
I let the rev limiter shift for me! lol j/kAt what RPMs are you shifting?
Really? Known quite a few hotter bikes myself.Ya the 6R run hot. I tried few things but it is what it is. Won't melt... lol
The thermostat, fan and ECU will prevent any damage. Earlier this season i had an overheat and the engine shut off on me because there was debris in the fan causing a wedge.Really? Known quite a few hotter bikes myself.
Even on a hot summers day flat out screaming the temp goes down not up...
A little off topic but didn't want to start a new thread.... I usually cruise around 5-6k, shifting anywhere from 7-11k depending on traffic...

Over the years I've noticed many of the riders on here run their bikes in a much higher RPM range than I do. With many cursing around 7-8k and shifting at an even higher rate, if I remember correctly.
I cruise around 4,500. Sometimes a little lower if I'm going slower and vice versa. I shift around 5-5,500. I just never liked the sound of the engine screaming while at cruising speeds. Seemed like I was making the engine work way harder than it needed to be. Pretty much on any road that has a 50MPH or higher speed limit I get into 6th gear.
One advantage I've noticed from this is great MPG. (I'm assuming because the engine isn't working as hard being in the lower RPM range). I rarely ride freeway and yet I still get close to 50MPG with all the stop and go traffic I am in. Bike is rated at 43 combined city/hwy.
Any major disadvantages to riding like this?
The 50MPG I get is city only miles. I so rarely take the highway that I haven't been able to calculate my mileage from that. But of course when I am on the highway I'm in 6th going 7k+ as well.I actually noticed the exact opposite. I got worse gas mileage shifting earlier and cruising at lower RPM. When I rang it out further to 6K+ i got better gas mileage. I regularly cruised at 7K+ rpm in 6th going 80ish and got my best gas mileage (with a passenger) of around 53mpg.
i heard the opposite as well, that when you stay around 7k you get better mileage. I only ride on the weekends so i never really cared what kind of milage i get. id say i normally shift around the 6k mark. If your running at freeway speed (75-80 around here) its going to be at 7k cruising so id say thats safe. The 50MPG I get is city only miles. I also avoid cursing at higher RPMs because of the vibrations. As soon as I get above 5,500 the vibrations get noticeably worse. It should be noted however that I have made many mods to my bike including clip-on handlebars and new foot pegs without the rubber padding. So I notice vibrations more than someone with a stock bike.
No, it will not harm the enginei appreciate all the replies. though the freeway speeds/rpms are not what i am concerned about. it's about my original post on whether or not cruising around 4,500 rpm and shifting around 5,500 is bad for the engine long term or puts myself in a bad situation for reaction time/control of bike when an incident occurs on the road.
