nothing specific to our bike, but a quick goggle search shows yamaha codes for that have to do with TPS... but for r6, a 14-20 is supposed to be good. kind of a startup throttle position check... not sure why a 17 would keep it from starting.

Yup, found the same thing. D01 17 is not an error code, but more like a pre-flight check. It should not have anything to do with the bike not starting. Apparently it is present any time you run a diag for codes.
Does your bike do anything when you try to start? If not is the engine kill switch set to kill and not run? If not and the bike does nothing, maybe the battery is too low. What you could try is removing the battery cables and leaving them off for a couple of minutes and then reattaching to reset the ecu. So first thing would be knowing if there are any weird symptoms or if anything recently happened to your bike. Last time ridden?
EDIT: Since your bike was not running when you saw that code it make sense (throttle closed value is between 15-20 D01 17 falls into that range. If you open the throttle that number will change. Doesn't really help you, but useful to know. If there are no other codes then we really need additional info.
