Just my 2cts, on a exhaust like that if your going to spend that much time hacking away at internals why not just hack it all off and start fresh? It would probably take less time that way, I know if I had the opportunity to have done that on my bike I would have, but with the under seat it's a lot more work, so I used my muffler as a base to work out from.
