Yup, if there's an ambulance on the way, only deal with critical matters. In all but one of the motorcycle crashes I've dealt with, all I did on the scene was instruct others to block the area with their cars, then did a quick check for bleeding, stabilized the spine and made the guy as comfortable as possible.

By Blocking do you mean stopping the flow of traffic or do you mean creating a safe zone? Over here only the police have the power to stop traffic, first responders can only warn oncoming drivers of the hazard ahead, if some idiot wants to ignore the guy standing by a bike warning folks of the hazard ahead 200ft down the road then it's that retards choice..is the law different in the states?

But honestly, if there's no way to create a safe zone without blocking the traffic flow, then so be it. Drivers have the legal responsibility to not operate in a manner that endangers anybody, and sometimes that does mean they've got to wait.

Around here Fire/Paramedics have the authority to block traffic as well. Usually the response to a serious accident will be a fire truck (with extraction equipment and paramedics on board) as well as an ambulance. They will immediately place the fire truck between the victim and the most significant traffic danger. Usually police only show up if the accident is one that requires investigation, or if the fire guys call them to help direct traffic.
