A sad accident for everyone involved

I really pray he wasnt texting, and rather fell asleep i get soooo angry seeing stupid people texting while driving, im sorry for the semi driver, i hope he gets through this knowing there was nothing else he could have done, my father was a truck driver, and had to tried to maneuver the semi, he may have gotten into a very bad situation.

I don't think there's really any way to slice this that's really better than another alternative, unless it was mechanical or sudden illness. Driving when you're tired enough to fall asleep, is as careless, if not more so than sticking your nose in your phone for more than a momentary glance.

I would like to suggest again that the minivan driver may have fallen asleep.

it was 5:40 am...it very well could have been.

few man thought it was him texting for a minute.....i hope he can recover knowing there was nothing else he could do.... it was in gods hands and gods hands alone after he tried to stop the truck.....

This brings to mind a situation a few years ago, where a coworker of mine was a passenger in a pickup that hit a motorcyclist that crossed into the pickup's lane on a curve. The driver tried to avoid her, but she had lost control of her Harley and they hit her head on.

She died almost instantly, and even though my coworker wasn't driving, he had nightmares every night for months where he would re-live that accident and he would see her face just before impact over and over. I felt so bad for him for having to go through that. Even though he was only a witness to it, it still haunts him, and always will.

My heart goes out to your sister in law's brother. You might suggest he seek some counseling to help him through this.

hello, i am one of the daughters of the man that was killed in the accident you posted. i just wanted to let you know that it was not your brother in-law's fault, and my family does not blame him for the loss of my dad's life. my dad struggled with diabetes for years and unfortunately lost his battle while behind the wheel. although they may have just told us this to give us some peace, i truely believe he passed before the collision. i tried to post this on the comment feed but the site wouldnt let me comment. if you could please post something so all the people who were insensitve and blamed texting or suicide would know, it would mean a lot to me. and please let your brother in law know also, we do not blame him, we understand there was nothing he could do, it was not by any means his fault, my dad would really want him to know that. thank you

This goes in accordance with the autopsy/police reports that they believe he went into diabetic shock from low blood sugar. This person who contacted me here is the real person. I believe from what I have been told that one of his daughters was a disbatcher for the police department in the area, and she has been in steady contact with him letting him know he couldn't have done anything to prevent the accident.

I wish the best for their family as this is a hard thing to cope with.

Wow, that's pretty awful for everyone. I know things happen, but that still sucks... I wish nothing but a swift mental and spiritual recovery for all involved...

Agreed, he couldn't have done anything else to avoid the accident with what he was hauling. It's sad to see someone lose their life over something as stupid and texting while driving, but accidents happen..

This accident had nothing to do with Texting, not sure how this came about, it was not about falling asleep, it was however a medical issue.

That's awful. This may sound wrong, but at least Jacob didn't get injured due to the other person's failure to stay in their lane (whatever the reason was). My condolences.

I used to drive truck. Just like bikes brake and turn differently than cars, so do semi's. A fully loaded truck at speed can't do much more than a train. Despite your best efforts, the vehicle weighs a LOT. It's just gonna go straight on. Most cagers just don't understand this.

My greatest fear when driving truck was that I would hurt somebody. I consider myself blessed that it never happened. I sincerely hope your in-law will some day be able to reconcile what he's feeling with the actual event.

Again..this was not a texting issue, it was a medical issue..

My deepest sympathies for your loss and condolences to you and your family. No one here knew when the first reports came out what the circumstances were in this tragedy. From what little we knew, texting or sleeping seemed a likely factor in this situation. Rookie's and others comments were made before we were informed of the exact cause of the accident. Please don't hold our opinions on this matter before the cause was learned against us.
