My brother has a Samsung Galaxy S Fascinate and it will idle with 100MB worth of unneeded background processes. Ending all those tasks speeds the phone up ten-fold. The phone only has 384MB RAM so any little bit helps!

Ummm....the Advanced App Killer is fantastic for Andriod. (Think Task Manager from Windows, but for your phone.) Really easy to kill tasks that are taking up to much ram, cpu, battery, etc. I have a Blackberry, so my advice ends here.
