wonÂ’t rev above 8000 RPM in gear

I’m having an issue were my bike won’t rev past 8000 RPMs when in gear it the needle bounces like when hiting the rev limiter also the sound is the same as well. When the clutch is pulled in it will rev to limiter but hickup around 7000-8000 but then continues to limiter. When in gear if i let off the Throttle just befor 8000 and reengage sometimes it will revs to limiter. When in neutral if i rev it fast twice in a row it will get stuck at 8000 for much longer then the up I described earlier.

I am not sure what that is. Hopefully somebody here can help. However, please don't rev your engine too high under no load, despite what squids do on Utube. Even when diagnosing, use caution revving that high under no load. :)

this problem started mid summer last year every thing was working fine and i thought my bike would not hold a constant speed in like it would slow down when holding it steady throttle but that could have been my imagination.. so then i was keeping my eye on my rpm and then suddenly it would not rev past 8000

i park inside every night and ride every day during the summer spring and fall also i dumped all gas and added injection cleaner still no go cleaned the air filter looked at gas filter but i don’t know what bad looks like for fuel pump.

What year?

How many miles?

Any modifications (Tuner, Exhaust)?

How long have you owned it (Time and miles)?

2013 model ,has a 49t sprocket 12,000 miles removed all fairings and replace headlight and add clipons everything else is stock. i perches it a dealer 2 years ago.

i’ve take out the fuel pump and check the gas tank for any junk but it doesn’t look like there’s anything in there that’s causing a problem my tps seems to be off so i adjusted it but I think that needs to be replaced none of the fuel line seem to be kinked by the gas tank so I don’t know where else to check.

Maybe call your local Yamaha dealer or cycle repair shop and ask for their advice? Not necessarily for them to do it. You might get lucky and find a helpful person willing to make a suggestion. Sounds like you got a gremlin there.

I would start with the basics - Check your oil and coolant to make sure they're not contaminated with each other that may indicate a head gasket issue. Pull the plugs and take a good look at the electrodes for each cylinder. Depending on how they look, this might lead you towards the issue. If it were a carbed bike, I'd say it sounds like an intermediate jet was clogged on at least one of the carbs, but Idk how how the FI is timed on our bikes and if there is similar on injectors.

The Seafoam idea is a fantastic start and will hopefully get the gunk out, if any.

This may be a stupid question - but can you see any cracks in the head or the engine block anywhere? If you did, you'd probably see some leaking, but I figured I'd ask anyway.

i will check that tonight do you know if over filling oil can cause this problem

Overfilling the crankcase can definitely cause issues. How many quarts did you put in??
i’m only thinking this because when i recently check the oil it was over the full mark but i don’t remember ever over filling it. i’m not shore if that’s just because it’s on a rear stand or not. when i changed it last i didn’t have the stand and i just held the bike up right when checking it.

ok i just changed out the TPS and seems to be really running a little better but i still have some hesitation around the 8000 mark if anyone rides in the next few days can you check how your bike revs on the streets through the 8000 mark it’s kinda hard to keep your eyes on the tack when reving that hi let me know how it looks

There should be no hesitation at all anywhere in the rev range. Good luck. Wish I could help more.

Did you pull the spark plugs yet to see what they look like? If you've already gotten to the point of taking out the fuel pump, you've only got a few more bolts and clamps to go to get down to the plugs.

No, there is a great write up over in the how-to I believe. You just need to prop the gas tank up, take out the air box, and unhook some hoses and a rubber liner. The job can be done with the tools that came in the tool kit, and the spark plug tool that yamaha supplies is absolutely perfect and is a MUST.

The rubber liner is the hardest part to remove. It has zip ties holding it in place, but you can release them without cutting, so they can be re-used. I only broke one off of mine.
