They are padded in the hips. Well, mine have hip pads that are removable. I'm not sure if they may have changed the style any since I bought mine a year ago.

I got caught in the rain about a dozen times last month... the worst of which were the two days on my trip to/from Rapid City, and then on Sunday it was an all out thunderstorm while riding an Iron Butt SS-1000. While I don't like riding in the rain b/c visibility sucks and cars are jerks...

OMGs ya, the gixxer is huge. The tank is about 2x wider, and sits much lower on the bike. I almost feel like I'm hugging the tank when I'm holding onto the handle bars. The pegs are set further to the rear so my legs are tucked a lot more. The bike is sooooo much lighter due to the aluminum...
